Breakouts

I read this today and figured I will share. I know a lot of people including myself that will benefit from it.

Did you know that breakouts on your face can be an indication that a certain part of your body that needs attention??? We try to treat acne many times with topical treatments and end up disappointed, many times it's simply internal! I went to a Dermalogica esthetic school for my esthetician's license and we learned about Dermalogica's 'Face Mapping', this is from ancient Chinese culture. Chinese ‘Mien Shiang’ literally means face reading and is also known as face mapping.♥ Jo Ann

1 & 2: Digestive System -- Eat less processed or junk food, reduce the amount of fat in your diet, step up water intake and opt for cooling things like cucumbers.
3: Liver -- Cut out the alcohol, greasy food and dairy. This is the zone where food allergies also show up first, so take a look at your ingredients. Besides all this, do 30 minutes of light exercise every day and get adequate sleep so your liver can rest.
4 & 5: Kidneys -- Anything around the eyes (including dark circles) point to dehydration. Drink up!
6: Heart -- Check your blood pressure (mine was slightly high) and Vitamin B levels. Decrease the intake of spicy or pungent food, cut down on meat and get more fresh air. Besides this, look into ways to lower cholesterol, like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish and flax seed. Also, since this area is chock-full of dilated pores, check that your makeup is not past its expiration date or is skin-clogging.
7 & 8: Kidneys -- Again, drink up! And cut down on aerated drinks, coffee and alcohol as these will cause further dehydration.
Zone 9 & 10: Respiratory system -- Do you smoke? Have allergies? This is your problem area for both. If neither of these is the issue, don’t let your body overheat, eat more cooling foods, cut down on sugar and get more fresh air. Also keep the body more alkaline by avoiding foods that make the body acidic (meat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, sugar) and adding more alkalizing foods like green veggies and wheat grass juice. Another thing that most of us forget - dirty cell phones and pillow cases are two of the top acne culprits and this area is what they affect the most!
Zone 11 & 12: Hormones -- This is the signature zone for stress and hormonal changes. And while both are sometimes unavoidable, you can decrease their effect by getting adequate sleep, drinking enough water, eating leafy veggies and keeping skin scrupulously clean.
Another interesting point: breakouts in this area indicate when you are ovulating (and on which side).
Zone 13: Stomach -- Step up the fiber intake, reduce the toxin overload and drink herbal teas to help with digestion.
14: Illness -- Zits here can be a sign that your body is fighting bacteria to avoid illness. Give it a break, take a yoga class, take a nap, take time to breathe deeply, drink plenty of water and know that everything always works out!

So the next time you break out or notice dark under-eye circles, look to your face map: your skin is probably trying to communicate on behalf of the internal organs. However, do remember that, as with all medical issues, it is always best to see your doctor or dermatologist for a proper prognosis. This is just a general guide to head you off in the right investigative direction - just because you break out
between the brows doesn’t always mean you have a bad liver!

I Got Served

Ever heard the saying “Dish it out but can’t take it”? Well I must admit that happened to me? It’s been ages since I posted anything on my blog and it’s because I GOT SERVED. Ha-ha. One of my greatest fears about starting a blog was to write something and people hate or criticize it. I know, I know welcome to the real world right? I’ve always had the “perfection complex” and for anyone who  doesn’t know what that is, it’s pretty much striving for flawlessness not necessarily for you but more so people won’t “talk” about you and I believe it stems from caring too much of what others think.

Anyone that knows me knows I call things as I see it or as some people might put it “highly opinionated” and I do this without really thinking of how it might affect the other person. Anyway, once I started this blog I knew I was opening myself up to criticism but decided to do it anyway. I was rather reluctant to share the blog with people but when people read it all the feedback I got were great with no criticism and that didn’t sit right with me because I know I just started writing and I still have some things to learn.  Now don’t get me wrong, that feeling was awesome but I also needed some constructive criticism so I decided to go to the one person that I knew would hold no punches (one of the things I love about her by the way).

I summoned up the courage, texted my sister in law and asked her to critic my posting titled “New Year, New You” and her response was “Do you really want me to criticize it? Because I’m worried you may stop feeling love for a sister” when I read that, I knew what was coming and I braced myself for it. A few minutes later I received a text from her saying “I liked the first half much better, then we got to smart goal settings and I went really? Bola (this is the short form of my name for anyone that didn’t know) use the term SUCCINCT to the T. Make it short, sweet, dynamic and full of impact. It was too long and the words went to black to white and black again and I lost my train of thought” ……Ouch, it was so not what I wanted to hear and my feelings were hurt but I had asked her to be honest and she was. At that Instant I knew how it felt to be at the receiving end of someone’s keeping it real moment now don’t forget I had asked for her opinion and she wasn’t mean about it; it made me think of some of the times I criticized people when my opinion wasn’t asked for and my delivery wasn’t as nice.

I’ve learned to be conscious with the way I criticize people as words hurt. It’s okay to be outspoken but let’s be mindful of the way we deliver those criticism. There’s a difference between constructive and mean criticisms and you never know when you’ll be the one getting served. Have you ever experienced a “You’ve got served moment”?  I would love to hear of your experience and how you felt. Please leave a comment
